FIFA Football for Hope Centre: Ultra-modern stadium in Besongabang

By Paddy Besong Tarkang in Mamfe

When the foresighted social developer, Mayor Orock Thomas approached the Besongabang community in Manyu Division of the Southwest region of Cameroon,  in 2012 , to solicit  for a piece of land  for the construction of an ultra-modern mini-football pitch, some skeptics took him for a joker.  Today, everyone is mesmerized by the sophisticated state-of-the-art mini-football playground that has been erected in the heart of Besongabang.
Known as the Besongabang FIFA Football for Hope Centre, it is situated a few kilometers from Mamfe town, the headquarters of Manyu Division. The wonderful project was realized thanks to the dynamism and clairvoyance of Mr Orock Thomas and assistance and support from FIFA, in partnership with Adidas, Kia motors, VISA, Emirates, Sony and Hyundai.

The ultra-modern mini-football stadium worth over FCFA 120 million was designed by FIFA engineers in concert with Greenfields Synthetic Sports Turf, a Netherlands-based company that specializes in the construction of synthetic football stadiums.

According to Franklin Ngwesse Ngabe, a Cameroonian engineer working with Greenfields Synthetic Turf and who personally coordinated the project, the Besongabang Football for hope centre is specially reinforced with accorder materials and shock pads buried under the synthetic turf that provides comfort and prevent users of the pitch from physical shock. The fascinating and enticing billboards capable of resisting the strong tropical climate were constructed by a German company, Ngwesse noted.
Elite of Besongabang village are full of praises for Mayor Orock Thomas, the initiator of the project.  While the traditional chief of Besongabang, HRH Tambe Takor described Mr. Orock Thomas is a brave hunter who has brought home an elephant, the scribe of the Besongabang traditional council, T.T Oben hailed Orock for fostering modernity and development of Besongabang. For his part, the president of the Manyu Divisional youth council, Paddy Romeo described the stadium as a memorable gift for the youth.
To Orock Thomas, his aim is simply to encourage sports and football especially among the youth of Mamfe in particular and Manyu as a whole. He said the green turf was already completely laid, while the buildings to house offices, rest rooms and dressing rooms would be ready sooner than later. Mr. Orock said the completed edifice would be inaugurated with a grandiose ceremony to be presided over by the minister of sports or his representative.
