Desecration of royalty:

NW Fons wash dirty royal linen in public
The fon of Ngienmuwa, Fon Teche Njei 11 and the fon of Bangolan, Fon Chafah Isaac X1, who are respectively the sitting President General and the former President General of the North West Fons Union, NOWEFU, have continued trading insults in the market place, even as they await the Court to rule on a motion filed by Fon Chafah concerning the functioning of NOWEFU. Observers say whatever the two Nowefu heavy-weights are evoking in public as the bone of contention the real reason behind the bad blood that now flows between them (we understand that they were formerly very good friends) is more under the surface.

The once revered NW Fons are fast losing the respect by the day
“We be form dis thing na for chop. But because some people think say na only them get for chop, we go better spoil’am so that all we go loss”. This was a remark of a NW fon, in pidgin, when he was confronted by this reporter to explain the real reasons behind the imbroglio in the North West Fons Union, Nowefu.
The ‘notorious and bizarre’ conflict of interest has virtually split the once vibrant and powerful fons’ union into camps, with one camp loyal to Fon Teche and the other to Fon Chafah.
Observers remark that the public utterances and ostrich posturing of these two heavy-weights of Nowefu is simply disgusting; it desecrates the once revered and envied institution of ‘fon’ in the NW region.
Yet even as the two protagonists evoke differences in opinion over the interpretation of the Nowefu constitution, observers say the real bone of contention is buried deep under the surface. Some even talk of differences over the sharing of the spoils of office.
In a reaction in the national daily, Cameroon Tribune of Thursday July 16 2015 (page 5), Senator Fon Teche Njei II of Ngienmuwa, maintained that until the general assembly of Nowefu elects a new President General, he remains the person in command. He debunked claims by some people that he has fired some influential members from the Fons’ Union. Fon Teche explained that no members of the union were ever dismissed.

“The treasury department simply published a list of Nowefu members who have not fulfilled their financial obligation for the past three years,” Fon Teche said, calling on these “irregular members” to regularize their situation with the union.
Fon Teche Njei 11 wondered aloud why the courts should be seized to settle internal differences in Nowefu, differences that according to him are purely traditional.
For his part, Fon Chafah Isaac explained that if he has since refused to pay his financial dues to Nowefu it is simply because he knows that the money would be embezzled. Fon Chafah wondered why the Nowefu secretariat project is not in progress despite the fact that funds have been raised for the project.
Fon Chafah said members of an association have the right to seek legal redress if they are not satisfied with the way rules governing the functioning of their association are interpreted.
Observers say the insinuations by the two protagonists is evidence enough that all is not well with Nowefu.
And many have remarked that this does not speak well of the fons, who are supposed to uphold the nobility of traditional institutions and are expected to lead by example.
It should be noted that the Nowefu imbroglio took a new twist when Fon Chafah addressed a correspondence to the SDO of Mezam accusing the sitting President General of Nowefu, Fon Teche, of wanting to sit-tight on the post, despite the expiry of his mandate.
Fon Chafah in the petition pointed out that Fon Teche’s sit-tight attitude was in flagrant violation of the principle of rotation and the spirit of fair-play. .
However, in his reaction to the accusation by Fon Chafah, the Nowefu President said Fon Chafah has not been mandated by the fons to talk on their behalf; “he is only expressing his personal opinion and not that of the fons”.
Fon Teche however explained that he had on 29 May 2015 convened an extra-ordinary Exco and general assembly meeting of Nowefu, at the Bambui Fon’s Palace and that during that forum far reaching resolutions were taken including notably a revision of the Nowefu constitution and the convening of an elective general assembly on 28 November 2015.
Other resolutions of the Bambui conclave included the reinstatement of Barrister Nico Halle as the emblematic Ntumfor (Messenger and Ambassador) of Nowefu and also the designation of Donga-Mantung Division to produce the next President General of Nowefu.
However, as members of Nowefu are bracing up for the 28 November general assembly, Fon Teche and Fon Chafah are expected to appear in court on Wednesday 22 July 2015. They would be facing the Mezam High Court Judge, Justice Mbaki Vivian, who is expected to rule on the motion filed by Fon Chafah praying the court to decide on whether the sitting Nowefu President General, fon Teche has the right to extend his mandate without the approval of the general assembly and whether he can convene a general assembly meeting after the expiry of his mandate.
With the internal wrangling in Nowefu, a commentator remarked that the union has been transformed from the club of royal, noble and revered fons that it should be to a club of booty-sharers and trouble-shooters. Some time ago, another reporter simply branded the fons as Right Royal Beggars.
