Prof. Nalova Lyonga- Vice–Chancellor of the University of Buea has been recognised for her role in the establishment and growth of the Catholic University Institute of Buea CUIB. An Excellence Award for Leadership was handed her in a ceremony presided over by the Bishop of Buea, His Lordship Dr. Emmanuel Bushu.
The plate presented bears inscriptions of the values of hard work, objectivity, and moral integrity written in gold, to what authorities of the Catholic University Institute of Buea (CUIB) say is in recognition of the role Prof. Nalova Lyonga played during the creation and take-off of the University.
In his address on the occasion, the chancellor of CUIB, Rev. Fr. George Nkeze Jingwa remarked that as a characteristic of CUIB, they have often embarked on identifying and honouring excellence, reason why they decided to recognise the significant role played by UB’s Vice Chancellor in significantly shaping the Institute to be recognised among the top 100 Catholic Universities in the World. In his words, “in a recent study published in the United States, CUIB was ranked among the top 10 Catholic Universities out of the over 280 others making a difference in the world today”. This, he says is partly because of the good mentorship the Institute receives from the University of Buea.
Lauding that the Vice-Chancellor of UB is a leader of great integrity and substance worth emulating, the Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of CUIB noted that at certain times, it was not a bed of rose as it was not an easy task to have the Vice Chancellor sign and give a go ahead for certain files. This he averred was due her scientific, objective and honest way of evaluation, reason why his staffs often rejoiced when the V.C gave a go ahead for their files because as he put it, passing “the Nalova test” which was not an easy task always called for celebration.
UB’s V.C was also accredited for the starring role she has played in promoting gender balance which now has a club at CUIB called “Heforshe” amongst others like the Junior Chamber International (JCI).
In response to her honorary award Prof. Nalova thanked the Chancellor of the Institute, Mgr. Emmanuel Bushu for recognising her beyond her physical self. With reference to leadership, she cautioned future leaders that it is a matter of perspective to be a leader adding that in leadership, people are always faced with the temptation of turning “WE” to “I” and neglect the democratic norm leaders ought to consider when making and allocating resources. With this, there is the possibility of serving oneself and neglecting the community.
With regards to the creation of CUIB, Nalova Lyonga said there were controversies on whether to give the go ahead or not but as she averred, those who stood against its creation “forgot that I am incorruptible. My colleagues in UB were with me”. And on a serious note, she cautioned the authorities of CUIB not to move too fast but firmly in furthering their entrepreneurial goals for the Institute till the end.
In a mass celebrated by His Lordship Dr. Emmanuel Bushu, guests and students were told of the need to emulate leadership qualities that help to build humanity through community service in academic institutions.
The award ceremony was attended by South West chiefs, CUIB staff, some UB staff, and the G.C.E Board Registrar among others with the combined animation of the UB and CUIB choirs.
