‘Amba Boys’ Multiply Kidnappings in Kumba
By Doh Bertrand Nua in Kumba
Many inhabitants of New Layout neighbourhood in Fiango,
Kumba have started escaping their homes and relocating to neighbourhoods
considered relatively safer following the intensification of kidnapping,
extortions and intimidations by suspected Amba boys.
An
inhabitant of the said neighbourhood who elected to speak to The Median on
condition of anonymity revealed that for over one week now, they haven’t been
able to have peace in the hands of separatist fighters.
“Amba
boys keep parading the quarter on motorbikes while brandishing their guns in
the air” an inhabitant of the quarter revealed adding that three persons were
kidnapped by the gunmen and some later released after paying ransom.
Our
source revealed the kidnap caused an atmosphere of tension in the quarter with
many persons relocating to nearby areas considered to be safer. He disclosed
that persons are forced to relocate following a recent move by the Amba boys to
move around from one compound to another requesting to know the profession of
all the inhabitants and occupants of the compounds. This act our source added
has caused many well-to-do persons to be under constant threats in the hands of
the Amba boys.
“When
you are kidnapped the Amba boys tell you to buy them guns or give money that will
be used to purchase weapons…such amounts vary depending on what you do to earn
a living” our source revealed adding that having vehicles or valuable property
in one’s compound around the area turns to attract the gunmen.
The
said neighbourhood had once been an Amba hotspot. The recent reappearance of
the separatist fighters our source added might signal a comeback of the gunmen
to the quarter. Security forces are still to descend to the quarter to restore
order we gathered.
