This was made known in a release by Sporting Toulon Var: ‘It is with great sadness that Sporting Toulon informs you of the death of Valery Mezague.”
According to reports by the French police, Mezague’s death has not being treated as suspicious, but an autopsy will be carried on Monday to determine the cause of the death.
“ An autopsy will take place on Monday, but at the moment we don`t believe the death to be suspicious,” said a spokesman for the Toulon prosecutor`s office.
The 30-year-old midfielder, who was part Sporting Toulon in the French fifth division, has made seven appearances for the Cameroon National team from 2003-2004.
It should be recalled that, on August 2003, Mezague spent 24 hours in a coma after he was involved in a car crash and it was feared he’d never play again. But, he made an incredible recovery and started playing.
Mezague throughout his career, played for a number of French league clubs including Montpellier and Sochaux in the top flight as well as a brief spell on loan with Portsmouth in England in 2004-2005 , English League 1 Bury in 2013 and in Greece with Panetolikos.
In his entire career, Valery Mezague made a total of 209 appearances scoring 20 goals.
A number of Cameroonian players both at home and abroad, have lost their lives this year. They include: Albert Ebosse of JS Kabylie killed in Algeria, Kamdem Jean Bosco, former player of Union Sportive of Douala, killed in car accident, Essomba Onana of Renaissance of Ngoumou who was knocked by a car in Tunisia while on trials.
