Mayor Patrick Ekema Awards Trophy |
The most watched of these finals staged at the Bojongo Court Area last Friday saw MUSANGO FC exchange soccer lessons with their teammates of SEREAL FC. In the end MUSANGO FC beat SEREAL FC 1-0 with beautiful football and camaraderie (the principal objectives of the tournament) showcased in the presence of Patrick Ekema Esunge, Mayor of Buea and some senior officials and other stakeholders of the Buea Municipality.
Similarly, it was beautiful soccer staged at the Bonavada Court Area, where Makondi FC beat Wonjonku FC 1-0, and at the Buea Town Green Stadium Saturday, where Goblizz FC beat Babungo FC 2-0; all under the watchful eyes of the chief executive of the Buea Council and other council officials and some councillors.
As craved by the Buea Mayor, the competition came to cement relationships among neighbourhoods in Buea, as well detect, promote and harness talent among youngster with a view to developing football in Buea municipality and the nation as a whole.
The objective of camaraderie was evident at the final at the Bojongo Court Area, as sundry fans that converged on the field expressed thanks to the Mayor and councillors of Buea Council for organising this fifth edition of the tournament. The fans supported their respective teams and with some arguing with fans of the opposing side and comparing the level of socio-economic development of their various localities.
According to the Mayor of the Buea Council, this fifth edition of the competition which is gradually drawing to its end has been a success given that, there have been no major incidents or injuries recorded throughout the course of the tournament and because the objective of fair-play and comradeship has been demonstrated by all the teams.
Unlike for previous editions, the Buea Council invested 1 million FCFA into this 5th edition of the Inter-Quarter Football Tournament, and close to CFA Francs 2 million has been earmarked for the Grand Final that comes up in a forth night at the Molyko Omnisports Stadium.
Meanwhile, the selection criteria for the Grand Final have been made known already: Cup winners and League Champions in each court area will compete in a mini tournament leading up to the grand final. In the event of the League Champions emerging as the cup winners, the runners up of the court area automatically qualify for the mini tournament.
So, eight teams will beginning tomorrow Tuesday, August 25, 2015 start locking horns to battle their way to the grand final. They will start with eliminatories, then semi-finals, the third place final, and eventually the grang final at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium on September 5, 2015.
Talking to the Median Newspaper at the end of the final at the Buea Town Green Stadium, Mayor Ekema said the previous criteria for qualification for the mini tournament were not fair enough. He said for objectivity to prevail, the two finalists at each court area will be the ones to constitute the eight teams needed to play the quarter finals, Semis, third place and the Grand final respectively.
Sponsored by Les Brasseries du Cameroun, Orange Cameroun and others in partnership with the Buea Council, the 5th edition has been generally acclaimed as successful. This is probably because Les Brasseries du Cameroun added 250. 000 FCFA to the prices awarded at the Buea Central Court area last Saturday. 150.000 FCFA of this amount was added to the cash prices, while the other FCFA 100.000 was used for refreshment.
As the 5th edition of the tournament draws close to its end, despite the little problems such as fights that broke out in some of the finals, the Mayor and other officials of the Buea Council and the populations as a whole are promising a bigger and better tournament next year, which according to the Mayor will kick-off in July 2016.
