Tombel wants her own MP
Militants of the CPDM party in
KupeMuanenguba III section, Tombel sub-division, have reminded President Paul
Biya of their old-time request for a separate parliamentary constituency for
the metropolitan sub-division.
The
militants made the call in a motion of support they addressed to the president
during a joint section conference of CPDM KupeMuanenguba III, Tombel, in the
Tombel town hall on Saturday, 21 July 2016.
Tombel
CPDM militants argued that not only has the population of Tombel become too
big, its brother town Bangem is too far off thus making the allocation for
micro projects paltry and insignificant to finance any meaningful development
projects in the two communities.
It
should be noted that KupeMuanenguba division has three subdivisions- Tombel,
Nguti and Bangem. While Nguti has a separate MP, Tombel and Bangem share one
MP. But political observers say the population of Tombel alone is too big to
share one constituency with another subdivision.
Some
observers say it is intriguing that Tombel whose population almost more than
doubles that of Nguti, shares one parliamentary constituency with Bangem, while
Nguti has a separate constituency.
It
is however not immediately known if President Biya will heed the request of
Tombel CPDM and this is because the criteria for carving out parliamentary
constituencies is not quite clear to anyone except maybe the president alone.
Besides, the situation of Tombel/Bangem is not unique. In Manyu division for
example, Mamfe Central subdivision with just 17 villages shares one MP with
Upper Bayang subdivision that has over 56 villages. Meanwhile, Akwaya whose
land mass almost equals that of Eyumojock, Mamfe and Upper Bayang put together
has just one MP, same like Eyumojock.
It
should be noted that in the South region where the president hails, almost
every subdivision is a parliamentary constituency.
