Mayor creates Mile 11 market to boost council revenue
Inaugurating the new market at Mafany new-layout quarters recently, the Mayor of Limbe 1 Municipality, Ronny Mbua said it was in a bid to boost the revenue of the cash-trapped municipality that councilors of the municipality endorsed a resolution to create a market at the mile 11 neighborhood.

The mayor expressed the hope that the new proximity market would also resolve the stress that the populations of Limbe 11 have been going through having to move right across the city to get to the main market in order to purchase even the most basic needs especially food items.
In his remarks during the inauguration of the new market, the Mayor noted that Limbe 1 council has hardly ever raised up to 40million from taxes, especially as most (About 99%) of business owners within the municipality evade taxes, thus hampering the development of the council area.
As such, the mayor emphasized on the need for payment of taxes by business operators adding that running the affairs of the council has not been easy. He urged for the formation of a market committee with members to see into the smooth functioning of the newly opened market and to ensure the success of the market and its activities. He urged roadside vendors in the quarters to relocate in to the market or face the consequences.
The ceremony to officially open the market also afforded an opportunity for the population of the quarters through their quarter head, Humphrey Monono, the GCE board registrar (represented) to channel some of their acute problems to the council executive. The problems included among others: Inadequate water and electricity supply, absence of street lighting, poor access roads. The mayor promised to look into the problems, but he at once reminded the populations of the need for them to collaborate, participate and contribute whole-heartedly to the smooth functioning of the Municipality. He informed the populations that plans were already well advanced for the provision of public toilets in the neighborhood.
However, Mayor Ronny Mbua advised the people to create a water management committee to carryout feasibility studies on the water project and also encouraged them to build permanent structures at the market site.
Created in 1998, the Mafany New layout, Mile 2 is bordered to the east by the Limbe river and the CDC palm nurseries; to the South by the Limbe camp; and the road to Sonara to its west.
