“Parents in rural areas have refused to send their children to
school because of the fear of the unknown and great ignorance”. These were the
words of the Divisional Delegate of Basic Education for Meme, Atem Sabas. He
was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 21st World Teachers Day
Celebrated on Thursday October 4, 2017 in Kumba.
Atem Sabas told
reporters that their greatest problem so far in the basic education family in
Meme is to actually see how they can convince parents of rural areas to send
their children to school.
“To be honest to
you, the kickoff of the academic year took off timidly because of the prevailing
situation in the northwest and southwest regions of the country but as the days
go by, momentum is gathered and the children are turning out massively on a
daily basis except for the rural areas” Atem Sabas revealed.
He added that it
is against such backdrop that his delegation has embarked on a serious
sensitization mission in the rural areas to see into it that awareness is been
created to the population to see the need to send their children to
school.
“I will stop at
nothing to see that I encourage parents not to relent their efforts in ensuring
that their children are send to school in order not to jeopardize their future
at this early stage of life” Atem Sabas promised.
Reacting on the
importance of the teacher’s day, Atem Sabas, the Basic Education Delegate for
Meme said the World Teacher’s day gives teachers the world over the opportunity
to reflect of the important role they play in the society. To him, teachers are
the pillars of the society as they can make or mar.
He urged all and
sundry to continue helping teachers where ever in the society to see into it
that they continue doing the great job that has been bestowed on them as movers
and shakers of the society. Atem Sabas noted that there is nothing as important
as education to the people adding that education has no price and so it is
second to none since without education everyone will certainly be in chains of
ignorance in the society.
