On the instruction of the President of the Republic, Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, about1000 troops and armor vehicles have been deployed in the northern parts of the country especially areas bordering Nigeria. The troops arrived at their destination since Monday 26 May 2014. The heavy troop deployment is in a bid to counter the rising threat from the islamist terrorist sect, Boko Haram.
The troops have a special mission to carry out reconnaissance operations and be ready to respond with fire power in case of any Boko Haram attack, according to military spokesperson, Lt. Colonel Didier Badjeck told Reuters, emphasizing that the troops were already patrolling along the northern frontiers with Nigeria.
Reports said two suspected Boko Haram militants were arrested by Cameroonian forces around the Waza neighborhood on Wednesday 28 May 2014.
Cameroon earlier deployed 700 troops under a joint regional effort to fight Boko Haram in March this year.
The deployment is also in consonance with President Paul Biya’s engagement during the recent summit on security in Nigeria that held in Paris.
Meanwhile, Sinhydro, the Chinese road construction company that got the contract to construct the Waza-Dabanga road in the Far North Region, according to press reports has abandoned the project after Boko Haram hit the site on May 16, killing one soldier and kidnapping ten of the Chinese workers.
Cameroonian workers working with the company were reportedly paid their last salaries last week.
Awa Fonka Augustine, Far North Governor, has however, called on the contractors to reverse the decision and get back to work. The Chinese engineers have said that the decision to stop works and quit the environment was that of their home government and they only obeyed.
It is believed that the Chinese are holding onto their industrial action to force Cameroonian authorities to hasten up and secure the safe release of their kidnapped brothers
