Some 300 patients suffering from eye
related problems in Bui Division of the North West region have been screened
and operated upon for free thanks to the partnership between a Spanish NGO,
Vision Sans Frontier and the St Elizabeth General Hospital, Shisong.
The
team of five Spanish Doctors made up of two ophthalmologists, one optician and
two nurses joined the team from the St Elizabeth General Hospital, Shisong led
by DrSiben to carry out the operations from the 9th to the 13th of April 2017.
According
to the Director of the Hospital, Sister KinyuyAldrine Mary Baseka, they engaged
in the campaign with the Spanish Non GovernmentalOrganisation given the growing
number of people with related diseases and also to boast the activities of the
ophthalmology Department of the Hospital.
She
said they nursed the idea of partnership with Vision Sans Frontier late last
year after a team of urologist from Spain came visiting adding that the
campaign came to fruition thanks to the desire of the Spanish team to bring
sight to those that have difficulties affording treatment and to share
experience with the ophthalmology department of the St Elizabeth General
Hospital.
On
his part, the Director of the Spanish Campaign, DrJaineJavoloy just like the
President of the Campaign Dr Isabel Signes at the end of the sensitization and
operation said they were happy to have taken part in the adventure.
is
worth noting that the Saint Elizabeth Catholic General Hospital Shisong, is one
the main health facilities in the North West Region of Cameroon under the
operation of the Tertiary Sisters of Saint Francis (TSSF) Shisong.
The
hospital was established in 1936 as a Maternity by the first Tertiary Sisters
of Saint Francis from from South Tyrol, Brixen (Italy), in response to infant
and maternal mortality at birth that were so common at the time.
The
Sisters were more sensitive to maternity services. The first maternity of
Shisong Hospital was a thatched building while cartoons were used for babies’ cots.
Over the years, the hospital has undergone some modifications to become a
dependable, 24 hours health service delivery point for clients within the North
West Region and beyond and its services have become diverse and more
specialized.
The
Catholic General Hospital has continued to improve its services by the addition
of another new department, namely, the Cardiac Centre. The Cardiac Centre,
which is the first such institution not only in Cameroon but also in this
sub-region of Africa.
It
is equipped with ultra modern technologies and prepared to offer a wide range
of cardiology services including diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart
defects, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology
