Fostering Bilingualism, Living Together:

Musonge Commission Gets Set for Field Work
Mafany Musonge presided over deliberations at the seminar
A one-day seminar holding on Thursday, at the headquarters of the Bilingualism commission in Yaounde, was aimed to get commission members abreast of the law on official languages in Cameroon in view of sensitizing and explaining the same to the public and target groups.
The seminar that brought together all 15 members and the permanent secretary of the commission was chaired by the Commission President, Peter Mafany Musonge.
Opening the seminar, Mafany Musonge said the seminar falls within the ambit of instructions by the head of state for commission members to adequately study and understand the law on official languages so as to better explain the same to the public and target groups.
Musonge added that following the promulgation on 24 December of law no. 2019/019 bearing on official languages in Cameroon, it thus became incumbent on the Commission members to meet and study the spirit and the letter of the law, so as to adequately explain it to the public and target groups.

He underscored the importance of the 24 December law, which was one of the salient outcomes of the Major National Dialogue.
Musonge expressed the hope that at the end of the seminar commission members would have a common understanding of the law; be conscious of the stakes and challenges inherent in its implementation, and be convinced that most of the concerns raised with regard to official languages in Cameroon have been addressed by the law.
The themes developed during the seminar included: the context and rationale of the 24 December 2019 law; analysis of the linguistics and bilingualism division of the presidency of the republic, and the major concerns addressed by the law.
The themes were developed by experts from the Bilingualism Commission, the Presidency of the Republic and the ministry of arts and culture.
