2015 Varsity Games

Buea University FC set for the kill
By Ajongakou Santos & Isifu Wirfengla in Buea

The University of Buea Football Club has sent electrocuting messages to her 2015 Varsity-games opponents after dismantling Buea United 1-0 in the final of the Buea Coaches’ Pre-season soccer contest, played Sunday April 19, at the Molyko Omnisports Stadium.

The Buea coaches’ preparatory competition was an initiative from a handful of football coaches of the amateur league to lubricate their players as well as put what they have been imbibing in the budding soccer talents over time. Sunday April 19 was set aside to identify the soccer heavyweight of the second division clubs that were taking part in this warm up tournament, in prelude to the south west regional league. Both sides had rubbed the turf during the group stage where UB FC were shocked to a 2-1defeat by Buea United. Both sides arduously meandered their way through, seeing off Mount Cameroon FC, Prisons Social Club, and Cinyodev FC in round one.
The outstanding runs of the finalists (UB FC & Buea U.) during group stages contributed to the inspiring number of spectators, especially the University of Buea Fans’ Club that ended up stealing the show. They were a uniformed variety of boys and girls dancing to the rhythm of beautiful tunes and drum beats on the touch line.  Key personalities at the event included South West Regional Technical Adviser of Football, Ayisi Dominic, the president of Dynamic FC, Joseph Tenda, Mr Nouck Protus of Little Foot FC of Mutengene, Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor, the president of south west region coaches, Mayebi John Yebi, Mr Bissong Thomas Makia and a handful of football mongers.

The final kicked-off with pump and pageantry at about 4 p.m., with each outfit determined to have the other for lunch and dinner. UB FC’s midfielder flew pass his opponents connecting their winger who had been arriving the left flank to skillfully volley past the keeper of Buea United. The 12th-minute-first-half goal put UB ahead till half time. Unfortunately for Buea United, UB FC dictated the tempo of both segments due to a solid defense backed by Che Sotarius, a pincer-like midfield compartment and a daring frontline replete with goal-hungry attackers. This mechanism constituted the fierce and resilient “soccer academicians” of Coach Nicholas Asongu that punctured “bulwarks” of Buea United’s head coach, Njoku Barnabas. Coach Njoku’s efforts to scratch and claw his boys back into the game painfully turned futile.
Talking to The Median at the end of 95 minutes, Coach Njoku said: “It was a warm up tournament, I have identified loopholes and will work on that before the league begins”.
Quizzed on the secret of his victory throughout the tournament, Nicholas Asongu spoke in monosyllables: “We’ve worked hard, the victory is important for me as coach and my boys; we hope our show during the league does not contrast.” In the meantime, UB FC has joined the rest of sporting disciplines of UB for the second session of block training for the upcoming university games. The disciplinarian, as Asongu is commonly called, said that he was prepared for the 2015 all varsity games to take place in the University of Yaounde I, and that the varsity games would not infringe his focus on the regional league. Interestingly, UB FC lost at the finals of varsity games last year in Douala on post-match penalties.
UB FC falls in Pool B alongside last year’s host and finalist, the University of Douala, Saint Jerome Institute and INJS. The games are expected to commence May 2 and end on May 9. It is a new dawn!
