Three classrooms, 27 benches, tables,
chairs, a toilet with hand washing and school garden equipment were on April
13, 2016 handed over to Government Secondary School Bangshie by Strategic
Humanitarian Services, SHUMAS and her partner Building Schools and Market
Makers much to the satisfaction of the school administration.
Created
in August 2012, Government Secondary School Bangshie has been operating in
rented premises and was therefore in dire need of classrooms.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony at
the esplanade of the school presided at by the Divisional officer of Bamenda I,
the principal, Abongwa Eric Abongwa said the timely intervention of Strategic
Humanitarian Services, SHUMAS and her partner Building Schools for Africa has
given hope to the students who can now study in a conducive environment.
“The
students, teachers and administration of GSS Bangshie remain very indebted to
SHUMAS and her partners for these indelible marks of philanthropy which will
certainly stand the taste of time for posterity to continue to appreciate as we
are doing today” noted Abongwa Eric Abongwa.
He
hoped that the classroom project will greatly reduce the illiteracy level rate
within the Bangshie community and its environs, a drop in early marriages,
teenage pregnancy juvenile delinquency amongst others.
On
her part, the Lord Mayor of Bamenda I Council on behalf of the people of
Bamenda I municipality thanked SHUMAS for the structures adding that it “will
assist in the development of the intellect” of their siblings economically,
socially and other wise.
She
equally saluted the spirit of cooperation among the Bangshie community and
encouraged them to always avail themselves when activities that need their
attention come up.
The
DO for Bamenda I just like the Divsional Delegate of Secondary Education for
Mezam heaped praises on SHUMAS for coming to the help of the four year old
school and called on the community to make use of the infrastructure by sending
their children to school.
On
her part, the Programes Coordinator of SHUMAS Billian Nyuykighan, on behalf of
the Director General prescribed judicious use of the equipment as a motivating
factor for SHUMAS and her partners to come back for more projects to the
community.
“I
want to call on the entire community to carefully and seriously protect these facilities
so that many generations of children and their families can benefit from them”
she added.
Marrianne
Johnson chairperson of Building Schools for Africa satisfied by the
mobilization and the judicious implementation of the project hoped that a minister
of Education should come from the school.
The
students and the community expressed their satisfaction and joy for the gifts
of classrooms and equipment in song and dance.
Created
in 1993 and legalized in 1997, SHUMAS is a Development Non Governmental
Organization with vision to of improving lives, reducing poverty and empowering
the poor so that they can realize their potentials and work towards their needs
without jeopardizing the future.
It
has special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social
Council and has tabled another application to the President of the Republic of
Cameroon with the support of the Governor of the North West Region seeking the
status of a Public Utility.
