Asongwe Henry, 36, Ambi Peter, 56 and Fon
Stephen were killed in Bambili, Tubah Subdivision of the North West Region when
a truck transporting laterite matriculated CE 521 HX reportedly suffered brake
failure and ran into them.
The
accident that happened at the major road junction into the Bambili main campus
of the University of Bamenda, on 16 May 2016 at about 11 a.m, also rendered
some six people seriously wounded. These victims were reportedly responding to
treatment at the Bamenda Regional Hospital at press time on Sunday.
Although
official sources say three were killed, unofficial sources estimate the number
at about 7, a claim which The Median newspaper could not independently confirm.
Sources
on-the-spot blamed the accident on brake failure by the truck that was
reportedly transporting laterite for road rehabilitation works in the
neighbourhood.
The
six who suffered serious injuries included commercial motorcycle riders and
public pay phone operators who often crowd the junction. Meanwhile, North West
Governor, Adolphe Lele Lafrique and the Vice Chancellor of the University of
Bamenda, Prof. Therese Nkuo Akenji, visited the scene.
The
Governor took measures for the corpses to be taken to mortuary while
investigations were opened to determine the cause of the accident. He also
ordered that the truck involved in the accident be cleared immediately.
Although
the accident has been blamed on brake failure, commentators have also been
quick to transfer the blame to the poor nature of the road and the
uncoordinated activities that take place at the very busy three corners
junction in Bambili.
