By Sarah Nkongho Ojong in Buea

The Minister of public health in collaboration with the Minister of Higher Education, Andre Mama Fouda and Jacques Fame Ndongo respectively expressed their joy of integrating directly into the public health sector medical students from the faculty of health in the University of Buea to start their medical career, while presiding over the convocation ceremony of the second batch of students from the faculty at the Dorothy Limunga Njeuma amphi-theatre, Saturday July 5, 2014.
The 145 students included 15 holders of Masters Degree in nursing education, 1 chemical pathologist, 26 bachelors of medical laboratory sciences, and 67 medical doctors amongst others.
Speaking during the convocation, Health Minister Andre Mama Fouda who was visiting the university for his very first time promised to reinforce medical studies at the University of Buea through the faculty of health by extending its studies abroad especially on midwifery. He hailed the medical faculty for having one of the best anatomy departments in the country.

The integration of the students whom many dubbed as lucky into the public health sector and extension of medical studies abroad are all steps taken by the government to improve health care and development in Cameroon and to work towards the achievement of development goals for Cameroon by 2035, as graduating medical students from the faculty of health in the University of Douala and faculty of medicine are also being recruited.
In a message to the doctors, the Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo hoped that the graduating students adopt virtues to suit their calling which is a profession that requires quality, integrity, honesty and professionalism, including the responsibility of always learning through books, hospitals and experts in the field who have been working before them.
On behalf of the Cameroon Medical Council, the Vice President highlighted some of the challenges faced by them as some qualified medical doctors fail to register themselves under the umbrella of the council according to section 2 of law regulating the practice of medicine in Cameroon which stipulates that ‘persons engaged in practice of medicine shall be subjected to the medical council’.
Also included in the challenges put forth by the medical council was the running of unauthorized medical facilities and traditional practices by charlatans who use the media to advertise themselves as he declared that the council is determined to stamp such practices completely out.
In her address to the students, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, Nalova Lyonga told the students not to be easily corrupted by the search for money and a better future urging them to be able to follow where the problem lies with common health issues like HIV/AIDS and malaria. According to her, the 20% cut on poverty to be accomplished by the vision 2035 must also be accomplished by a full medical core in the country.
The students were drilled by the Registrar on how to manage their tasks in the medical field as they vowed to not willfully administer wrong drugs, seek the well being of those placed under their care, and do all to improve the level of their profession.
The first 5 best students from the faculty presented with Dr, Akem Gilbert as best overall with prizes from the state, minister of public health and medical council, best female student (Lydia), Dr, Arrey with the best results in research thesis overall of 89%, Dr, Ndzelem Laura best female medicine student and Sone Lawson best in medical laboratory sciences with a price from the senate.
Present at the convocation ceremony were Governor of the Southwest region, Mayor of the Buea council, Minister of women’s empowerment and the family, President of Cameroon medical council, Imam of Buea, Dean of health faculty, Pro-Chancellor, professor Monekosso, Dean of Bamenda and Douala universities, Rectors of University of Yaounde I and II and a host of others.
