GCE ‘A’ level results released

For the GCE ‘A’ level, 38.000 candidates registered, 330.37 candidates sat for the exams. 11670 passed with a percentage passed of 35.52%. The results witnessed a drastic drop compared to 2016 when some 46.000 candidates registered and 43.000 sat the exams and 29.000 passed giving a percentage passed of 66.52%.
Some results have been held for malpractices. Results of candidates who sat without prior registration have been withheld in order to verify their authenticity. Candidates can get to their centres to get results.
For technical GCE 3472 candidates registered, 2567 wrote and just 574 passed with a percentage passed of 22.36% as against 54.33% in 2016.
For now the GCE ‘A’ level and technical GCE have been released. Results of the GCE ‘O’ levels have not been released. Candidates can get their results via SMS or listen to CRTV Yaounde as from 8.30.

Extrapolation from GCE results:
Over 20.000 potential freshers deprived of University education

The results of the 2017 GCE A and O levels were Friday and Monday respectively released by the minister of secondary education. Extrapolating from the official statistics of the results of the GCE Advanced level one notices that at least 20.000 potential University students would miss the opportunity to enter university this academic year.
This is because barely 11.670 students passed the ‘A’ level this year, down from 29.000 in 2016. The statistics also reveal a marked drop in both the number of registered candidates and the number of candidates who sat the exams.
In 2017 33.000 candidates sat the A level exams down from 43.000 in 2016, a difference of 10.000 candidates.
Also, 38.000 students registered for ‘A’ level in 2017 as against 46.000 in 2016, a difference of 8.000 students.
The statistics of the technical GCE ‘A’ level are even more worrisome. Only 574 candidates passed (22.36%) out of the 3472 candidates who registered and 2567 who wrote. The percentage passed in 2016 was 54.33%.
As for the Ordinary level, the situation is even more catastrophic than for the A level. Here barely 25.29% passed down from the 62.17% last year. In terms of real figures, at least 50.000 students who were supposed to move to Lower Sixth will have to repeat form five.
A commentator described the results as simply pathetic.
