Mile 29, Muyuka:

Memorial service for accident victims
By Boris Esono in Buea
Following the fatal accident that occurred at the mile 29 hill on August 19 and other recent accidents in the country, the Buea and Muyuka councils together with the Presidents of the Buea and Muyuka Chiefs conferences will organize a cleansing ceremony at the dreaded Mile 29 hill to be attended by denizens of the two municipalities.
The announcement was made public through a communiqué co-signed by the mayors of Buea and Muyuka, and the presidents of the two chiefs conferences.
Ahead of the event that is scheduled to take place on 1st September 2017, the Mayors of both councils, Patrick Ekema and Nkeng Michael respectively, have taken measures to ensure a popular memorial.

The ghastly accident at the mile 29 hill near Muyuka left at least 20 people dead and several others wounded. In the past four months of 2017, the Buea-Muyuka highway is said to have recorded over four fatal accidents, each of which led to at least one dead.
This various incidents have been blamed on the poor driving by truck drivers, most of whom find it difficult to grapple with the very long and steep hill that stretches down from Ekona to Mile 29. On many occasions, the heavy vehicles have lost their brakes and run into the ravens that border the road, crushing any vehicles on their path.
Observers say the lone speed brake on the hilly road is inadequate to mitigate the danger of accidents.
