36 Graduate from AIMS Cameroon, Limbe |
The African institute of mathematical sciences AIMS
Cameroon on Wednesday June 20th 2018 graduated the 5th cohort of 36 students
(11 females and 25 males) from 15 African countries with a Master's degree in
Mathematical sciences after undergoing a 10months intensive program.
The
graduation ceremony took place at the Limbe city council hall under the
patronage of the minister of higher education. The minister was represented by
the SG of higher education Prof. Wilfred Nyongbet Gabsa who congratulated the
graduates for excellence and urge them to be torch bearers and true ambassadors
of the institution where ever they find themselves.
He was enthusiastic as the best graduating
student was from Cameroon. He equally congratulated the entire staff of AIMS
for their dynamic efforts to make the students succeed through innovative
pedagogical approach as well as inviting both national and international
Mathematical Guru to lecture students from their expertise and knowledge.
Wilfred Ngongbet said at this stage of the
society, the world is going scientific and thanks to institutions like AIMS,
they are making people and students understand that they are living in a
mathematical world and he is certain that the training the graduates have
received from AIMS will always be at the center stage of the emergence and
development of African and the world.
Speaking
during the solemn occasion, the guest speaker Barrister Nico Halle lauded the
graduating students on their patience and zeal to succeed during the intensive
program.
He spoke
on integrity which is one of the four cardinal principles of the institution.
Nico Halle said it is very important now than ever before in the world for
everybody to uphold integrity for it is a moral value that can build a nation.
"If
you don't have integrity your training is a waste for education without
morality amounts to is merely training clever devils which amounts nothing. We
have to realise that African which the most endowed continent of the world is
the poorest because we never seek the face of God in solving our problems and
we don't use the core values that propel us to succeed in society" said
the peace crusader.
He went
further to cite the Anglophone crisis as a case to look at because there is the
absence of peace which is an aspect of integrity. He therefore called on the
graduates to shun all forms of falsehood and setbacks that will destroy their
newly acquired skills which most needed for the development of Africa.
"Before doing anything think about your legacy and strive to make a
difference," said Nico Halle.
In his
welcome speech, the government delegate to the Limbe city council Andrew
Motanga expressed his joy for Limbe having been amongst the selected cities to
host AIMS and said it is due to the availability of big companies in the city
whose activities are connected to science that goes with mathematics.
While
congratulating the graduates and AIMS Cameroon staff for their hard work, the
GD said AIMS Cameroon has given the city the opportunity to host renowned
scientists in the world.
He went
further to present some challenges facing the institution in Limbe such as
infrastructural development, a befitting structure to host the school
explaining that since the government gave a land for the structure to be
erected on, nothing has been done. He noted that some people are busy lobbying
behind the scenes to get AIMS Cameroon transferred elsewhere, an allegation
which AIMS authorities quickly debunked.
AIMS
Cameroon center president, Prof. Mama Foupagnigni said that mathematics and
technology are very important for the development of a nation. He asked the
students to have sense of giving back and carryout activities that will impact
the lives of people.
On his part, Prof. Marco Garuti, AIMS
cameroon Academic director said the training acquired by the students for the
past ten months is to prepare them for entrepreneurial career and life.
Mary
Bernadette Fultang Timchia, chief operating officer, hailed the devotions of
the students despite the challenges faced. She said Africa will be bright
because of the graduates from AIMS and other science institutions. For this,
She asked them to rely on their passion, hope when the seems to be no hope and
be wise people so as to keep succeeding.
During
the ceremony, there were video messages of congratulation and encouragement
from the CEO of AIMS Thierry Zumahoun and AIMS founder Neill Turtor.
The best graduating student, Maryse Manuella Moutamal
from Cameroon expressed her gratitude to the entire staff of AIMS Cameroon for
helping her and her mates achieve success. She said apart from AIMS empowering
them, they also encourage team spirit looking at the Pan African aspects in
their cardinal principles. She called on people who are interested in Maths
especially girls to apply at AIMS to achieve success.
Out of
the 36 students graduating, 9 students were recognized for their distinction as
against last year which was only 4 students out of 46 students. This year also
had 9 students in the category of very good pass.
Also
present at the ceremony was the representative of the SW governor, the vice
chancellor of the University of Buea, Representative of the SDO for Fako and
other dignitaries including partners and collaborators of AIMS Cameroon.
It worth
mentioning that the graduation ceremony was taking place across the six centres
of AIMS in Africa which are Cameroon, Senegal, South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania
and Rwanda.
