Meme youths extend thanks to president Biya
for the wonderful gesture
Say it is an old dream that has finally
come true

The
announcement on Friday 7 March 2014 of the creation of a campus of the
University of Buea, in Kumba, has not left the populations of K-town especially
the youths indifferent. In a swift reaction to the announcement, Meme youth
leader and president of the CPDM Meme IC, Kumba III section, Dr. EbongoZacksNanje,
immediately rallied the youths and together they addressed a motion of thanks
to President Biya, for what they described as a wonderful gesture.
“President Biya, we cannot
afford to be indifferent to your decision to create a Higher Technical Teachers
Training College in Kumba. The coming of that institution is something we have
been dreaming for a long time now. That you have decided to transform our dream
to reality only shows your attachment and concern for the development and well
being of the people of Meme Division and the South West region as a whole.
President Biya, we thank you a million times for this wonderful gesture. Your
action is proof that you truly have the South West people very close to your
heart,” reads a portion of the motion of thanks written by Meme youths and
signed by their leader, Dr. EbongoZacksNanje.
Dr.
EbongoZacksNanje is thankful to President Biya for creating Kumba University
When The Median caught-up with
DrEbongo, who is also the chief medical officer of the Kumba divisional
hospital, the very popular and dynamic social actor and politician could not
conceal his joy.
“The entire South West region
should show gratitude to President Biya for giving them a second University. We
of Meme division are particularly happy that Kumba was chosen to host this
university,” he said, corroborating that the advent of the university will
being multi-faceted development to Kumba.
“Children from all over Cameroon
will converge on Kumba to gain education. Particularly, the people of Ndian,
Manyu, KupeMuanenguba, Lebialem and Fako now have an alternative to Buea
University,” DrEbongo said, projecting that Kumba’s economy would be boosted,
especially as mini-cites, low-cost houses and new hotels would have to be
constructed to handle the expected influx of populations into the town.
President Biya’s gesture comes
on the heels of the celebrations to mark the reunification of the two Cameroons
in Buea on 20 February. It should be recalled that South Westerners were
scorned and mocked at by many, when the president failed to announce any big
projects for the region during the celebration. Many South Westerners also did
not hide their disappointment with the president for “taking the people of the
South West for a ride.”
But President Biya (also fondly
called the Sphinx) is known for his penchant for springing surprises. His
creation of the university of K-town is a most welcome and legendary surprise
by the president. And that may just be the reason why all over Kumba the people
are all praises for him.
The university of K-town has 14
departments including agriculture, forestry, computer engineering, journalism,
education accounting etc.
As the populations of Meme Division
continue to celebrate their university, Dr. Ebongo like Oliver Twist, did not
forget to remind president Biya that the coming of the varsity may also invite
new problems on the city that need to be pre-empted. He said it is expedient to
also consider raising the Kumba district hospital to a fully fledged regional
hospital with specialist doctors and other logistics that go with such status.
Ebongo explained that kumba being the economic melting-pot of the South west
region, the coming of the university coupled with the tarring of the
kumba-Mamfe road, will further increase the already charged traffic along the
roads leading to kumba; and accident cases would need prompt attention by
qualified medics.
It should be mentioned that the
reaction of the youths of Meme is only the tip of the ice-berg. Many
associations and groups including the south West Elites Association- SWELA, are
already preparing motions of thanks and support to president Biya, The Median’s
correspondents in the SW have confirmed.
