Anye Hillary |
By Lord Havöc in Yaounde
Saturday, 28 February 2015 marked a new dawn for the very popular Ancien Bonas Veteran Football Club in Yaounde. That was when the new president of the association, Anye Hillary, was installed into his new functions after he was voted into office in a transparent election one week earlier.
The event, which began at 4:00 p.m., was attended by a great majority of the club members as well as members of some sister veteran clubs that were officially invited, such as Jouvence Veteran Club (JVC) and Mankon Veteran Club (MVC).
In an ex cathedra presentation on the occasion, the highly respected President Anye Hillary called on members to observe a minute of silence for all departed Ancien Bonas members, wished a speedy recovery to all those who are not in good health and implored God to grant journey mercies to their fellows who were travelling to join them in the celebration.
Sounding overly positive and confident, he intimated that the focus of his new government was on participatory partnership wrapped in complementary effort.
The high point of the eloquent president’s address was when he invited dissenting members of the group to reconcile with one another. Said he:
“Without peace and reconciliation nothing works well. I want to plead that each and everyone should greet their neighbour and say ‘I love you well, well’. Let bygones be bygones. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge which almost drowned the foundation of Ancien Bonas…The foundation was shaken but the bridge was not broken. The new-look Ancien Bonas is development-oriented because each of us is our brother’s keeper…”
Making reference to the inspirational preaching of Rev. Dr. Nyansako Ni-Nku, the erstwhile Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, Anye quipped: “When brothers fight, it is the stranger that enjoys the benefit.” He thus called for such a fight amongst members of Ancien Bonas to be a thing of the past.
Heavy feasting that consisted in eating, drinking and dancing and which went late into the night graced the occasion. As the feasting went on, members of Ancien Bonas who talked to The Median agreed that never before had a president of the association been voted with such unanimity as Anye was.
For his part, the new president told this reporter how his two-year mandate would be different from those of his predecessors. “We need to begin from where they ended,” he said. “We will instill a new spirit in the club, and it will be one of reconciliation. We will be one another’s keeper. One of the new things we will introduce in the association is a quarterly magazine. In the days ahead, we will also create a website through which non-members in and out of the country will know what we are doing.”
