The Paramount Ruler of the Bafaws and President of the Southwest Chiefs Conference, HRH Senator Nfon V.E Mukete, has called on parents and guardians in Kumba and Cameroon at large, to nurture their children in a very good way, not only educationally but also morally, for character; integrity and honesty are what makes a person. He made the call during the presentation of New Year wishes to him, by Quarter Heads of the Kumba paramount chiefdom, in his palace in Kumba on February 26, 2015.
During the ceremony, the Quarter Heads led by Nkume Thomisco Mboe, expressed gratitude to Nfon Mukete for the trust and confidence bestowed on them as quarter heads within his chiefdom. They promised to continue working together in the spirit of fraternity and concord, and to use their wits and wisdom for the supreme interest and satisfaction of all.
The Quarter Heads however, used the occasion to outline some of their worries to the Paramount Ruler, among which are; the interference on the quarter council’s service by Zonal Development Teams set up by the Kumba II Council on days of keep Kumba clean; the increase in the burial fee of Kumba II council area unlike the other two council areas within Kumba; the problem of bad roads leading to the various quarters; the dismay of the people of Kumba as concerns the low intake of the sons and daughters of the land into HTTTC Kumba and the need to map out quarter boundaries to avoid confusion and also, the need for more security in the quarters, following the terrorists attacks in some parts of the country, particularly in the Far North.
After listening to their plea, the paramount ruler assured them that their worries would be taken care of.
But Nfon V.E Mukete also used the occasion to express worries about bilingualism in Cameroon. Using the National Bilingual Daily Newspaper, Cameroon Tribune, he observed that 90% of the paper’s content is in French, while English has barely 10%. He regretted that because of this Anglophone Cameroonians are not well informed about important developments in the country, and most government decisions remain unknown to most Anglophones.
The veteran politician lamented that all attempts by him to convince the Director of SOPECAM to balance the paper in French and English have gone in vain. He said that as the president of the Southwest Chief conference, he will do all to table the problem to the chiefs at their next meeting, so that a memorandum can be written to the Head of State to that effect.
The Senator used the occasion as a platform to call on the quarter heads to support the CPDM party and also appealed to them to persuade their subjects to buy their party cards. He also called on the population of Kumba to embrace modern agriculture. He urged them to rally behind the Head of State in support for the war against Boko Haram.
He urged quarter heads to identify and denounce all illegal immigrants in their quarters.
