Teachers in Cameroon on Thursday 6 October
joined their colleagues the world over to celebrate World Teachers Day under
the theme “Valuing teachers: Improving their status”.
In
all the regions of the country, special ceremonies were organized to salute the
work of teachers who are said to constitute the builders of the foundation of
society.
In
Buea, Regional Capital of the SWR, a host of dignitaries joined thousands of
teachers at the official ceremonial ground at Bongo Square to commemorate the
day.
The
Governor of the SWR, Bernard OkaliaBilai who presided over the event, called on
all present to reflect on the problems faced by teachers in Cameroon. He called
on teachers to be patient saying the government is doing everything possible to
see into their objective problems.
Speaking
to The Median newspaper, Madam Jong Nicholine, Biology teacher at GSS Biyuku,
called on the government to provide more incentives to the teachers especially
those who leave far away from the school they teach. To her, the reason why
some teachers refuse to go to rural areas is because of poor roads, inadequate
water supply and lack of electricity.
The
same frustrations were expressed by AkafuVenasius, teacher at GHS Bokova, who
called on all stakeholders in the academic milieu to assist teachers both
financially and materially. “Cameroon cannot achieve vision 2035 without
teachers,” he said, noting that teachers have a vital role to play in the
development of any nation.
At
the close of the event some 7 teachers where decorated with medals for their
dedication to the teaching profession despite the challenges and odds they
face. Match past by the teachers of
different schools and a visit of some of the products displayed by some
institutions crowned the day.
World
Teacher's Day was established by UNESCO in 1994 to highlight the role of
teachers in the society.
