Y’de varsity in networks with ICT
powerhouses
By Rachel NtubeNgwese in Yaounde
The move towards the modernization of
higher education in Cameroon is gaining more impetus in the University of
Yaounde 1 as the institution networks with different partners to improve the
campus connectivity with the numeric world in a bid to facilitate research and
improve the quality of learning in the campus.
The
modernization process which actually began in 2013 with the generalization of
the wifi internet network throughout the campus and the opening of online courses
in partnership with foreign institutions of learning started yielding concrete
results in 2015 with the putting in place of tele-evaluation programs which
added more credibility to the ongoing e-education system in the institution.
This
credibility has equally attracted other opportunities to the institution as it
has been the case with the ELSEVIER network working in partnership with the
World Bank to evaluate the quality of studies in university institutions in
Africa, and grant necessary assistance in their role to improve science,
technology and medicine.
It is in this respect that the university of
Yaoundé 1 adding to its outstanding performance as one of the top ten
universities in Africa was deemed qualified to benefit from the services of the
Elsevier editorial network to grant the institution access to numeric data
information of up to 25 percent of global internet data on science, technology
and medicine, across 23 different disciplines.
The
grant was materialized in Yaoundé last Friday through a partnership accord
signed between the rector of the university professor Maurice Sosso and Kamel
Mohammed representative of the Elsevier network in the presence of the minister
of higher education professor Jacque Femme Ndongo in the arts building of the
university campus.
Through
this partnership accord, the Elsevier group seeks to attain three main
objectives. According to Kamel Mohammed, the first objective is to encourage
and improve research, then establish capacity building activities by providing
update information of other research results around the globe, and finally
strengthen their research strategy through frequent evaluation.
The
university rector appreciated the offer which he said will boast research in
the institution and he called on the entire university community to take best
possible advantage of the Elsevier services. He equally thanked them for
accompanying the numeric revolution ongoing in the university.
