NW MPs advocate a truly decentralized
unitary state
Over 10 members of Parliament and Senators
of the ruling party CPDM in the North West region have appealed to the Head of
State Paul Biya to release all arrested Anglophone activists and hasten the
implementation of the 18 January 1996 constitution that defines Cameroon as a
decentralized, unitary and one and indivisible country.
This was part of the 10-point resolutions
arrived at during a meeting on Wednesday 15 February 2017 held at the Ayaba
Hotel in Bamenda, North West region at the behest of elder statesman and former
PM, Senator Simon AchidiAchu.
The
MPs acknowledged the efforts already made by President Paul Biya in finding a
solution to the crisis, noting especially the putting in place of the
Inter-ministerial Ad Hoc Committees which according to them have proposed
solutions to some of the problems raised by Trade Union leaders.
They
also hailed the Head of State for creating the National Commission for the
Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism which they consider as a
salutary and a giant step in the right direction. The MPs urged the president
to appoint members of the Commission without further delay, so that effective
work can begin.
Resolutions of the Bamenda Meeting
Simon
Achidi and his colleagues expressed deep concern and regret about the negative
consequences the crisis and the ongoing stalemate is inviting on the youths,
who have been kept away from school for over three months and counting.
Among
others the MPs and Senators are urging traditional and religious authorities as
well as civil society actors to add their voices to the crusade to bring an end
to the stalemate.
