Pre-occupying sanitary situation in Buea

By Boris Esono in Buea
The municipality of Buea, recently is suffering from air pollution caused by various heaps of dirt found in major points in the town. It is commonplace to find piles of dirt along the main road in Buea. The content of the waste is mixed with sewage, containers, bottles and unwanted plants. The stretch of road in Great Soppo, Molyko, Bunduma and glaring cases of the gradual decay of the Buea Municipality.
Waste containers are rare in distribution with the increase of waster generation in communities. Often the size of the refuse vessel is relatively small in relation to the number of households around the community. With this, many people devise spots to throw dirt usually close to human activity. The act is steadily becoming a routing and tradition such that when the rubbish is not disposed, it decomposes like is the case of Buea recently.

Vectors of diseases like rats, mosquitoes and other insects are likely to turn these garbage spots their homes. The devastating effect will be an increase of diseases in communities. Heavy stench filtering from the dirt around the road makes it undesirable and unbearable for any user. The littered streets combined with human movement invoke a sense of irresponsibility and environmental neglect.
From all indication, HYSACAM has to revise its waste disposal system and implore more refuse vessels because Buea is inch by inch losing its sanitation value. Also, the communities must be environmentally responsible because cleanliness is next to godliness.
