The already rich broadcast media landscape
in the Northwest region is blessed with yet another radio station.
Christian
Broadcasting Service Bamenda hit the airwaves on Friday January 20, 2017 and
was inaugurated by the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, Rt
Rev. Fonki Samuel Forba.
Operating
on Frequency Modulation, FM 101.0, and located at the BamendaNtamulung hill,
the radio which is an arm of the Presbyterian Church Communication Department
has as mission “to preach Christ in every way” and given its Christian nature,
it is open to all recognized churches and the general public.
Speaking
at the inauguration ceremony, the Moderator of the PCC, Rt Rev. Fonki Samuel
Forba just like the church’s National Communication Secretary, Rev. Mokoko
Thomas Mbue and the North West Regional Delegate of Communication, Dr Marie
Louis B prescribed responsible journalism as a base for the success of the
radio.
All
of them were unanimous that with the tense socio-politico economic environment
in Cameroon worsened by the “happening now” syndrome championed by citizen
journalists on social media, there was need for the radio to respect the
journalistic norms of objectivity, balance and fairness.
The
Moderator also used the opportunity to announce that feasibility studies are
ongoing for the setting up of a television station for the church.
During
the inauguration, the sum of FCFA 2 million was raised to support the radio to
purchase furniture for its offices.
Christian
Broadcasting Service Bamenda has as pioneer station Manager, Mme Rose Obah who
is also the President of the Cameroon Association of English Speaking
Journalist North West Chapter and has seasoned journalists like Wanchia Cynthia
was is coming in with a wealth of experience from Radio Hot Cocoa in Bamenda
where she served as programs officer.
It
is worth noting that CBS Bamenda which is under the Bamenda Bureau of the PCC
Communication Department is a sister radio to CBS Buea that is under the Buea
Bureau.
The
Bamenda Bureau, whose rudimentary stage goes back to 1983 and 1984, started
effectively in 1985. The Office is officially known as the Communication
Department North West Region. Before the radio came it had a Recording Studio
and produced programmes for broadcast over five Radio Stations in Bamenda.
