The council of the University of Buea has
adopted FCFA 11bn as budget for 2017, up from the FCFA 9.6bn in 2016. This was
during a meeting of the Council of the University that took place on Wednesday
1 February 2016 in the campus of the University.
According
to UB Vice Chancellor, Prof. Pauline NalovaLyonga, the budget increase is
informed by the rising cost of running the institution. “There is a lot of
research needed to be carried out but there is limited means. The student
population keeps increasing but the classrooms are limited. The University
itself is ambitious and it must have an ambitious plan,” Nalova said.
On
the issue of the recent upheavals in the country, Prof. NalovaLyonga expressed
the hope that things will return to normal with the students and teachers
answering present in class.
“All
the problems raised were examined at the adhoc committee and solutions were
proposed in Bamenda. So we really do not have any problems anymore. UB was not
part of the strike by teachers and lawyers. The strike action was only meant
for Primary and Secondary establishments,” the VC said, noting that the strike
only got to UB because of the social media.
According
to the various officials, the academic calendar has been modified with more six
(6) weeks of lectures to be added to make up for lost time caused by the
strike.
The
33rd council meeting presided by the chairperson and Pro-Chancellor of UB,
Prof. Maurice Tchuente also validated twenty (20) files due advancement while
50 others were promoted to higher grades, such as prof. EnohTanjong who was
raised to full professor.
At
the end of the meeting, it was unanimously agreed by the officials present that
UB will resume school on Monday February 6, 2017.
