Shock, tension and confusion gripped the populations of Fiango, in Kumba 11, on Sunday 29 July 2018, as a serious gun battle ensued between gunmen and government soldiers following an attack on the local police station.
At about 11am on the fateful day, reports went viral in the town about the presence of some unknown gunmen in Fiango. The reports said the commissioner’s vehicle was vandalized before it was set ablaze.
It was thanks to the timely intervention of the elements of the Kumba fire-fighters brigade that the fire was put off and the vehicle taken away, we learned.
None of the officers was injured in the attack as they all carefully hid themselves in their offices. Commentators praised the officers for their restraint, saying any attempt to retaliate would have led to loss of innocent lives in the highly populated locality.

Taxation Worker Picked by Stray Bullet
In the afternoon of Sunday, news spread like bushfire that a Kumba taxation worker was caught by stray bullet. Fozao Colombus is said to have died shortly after the incident. At the moment there is still controversy as to whether the stray bullet was from the gunmen who stormed Fiango or from the security forces.
Residents revealed that Columbus was shot around a popular bar where he went to eat Achu. He was caught by stray bullet as he attempted to leave the vicinity of the crossfire. His remains were later transported to the Buea mortuary.
The recent developments are causing a lot of panic in Fiango, the most populated subdivision in metropolitan Kumba.
Fiango is presently hosting thousands of displaced persons from areas like Mambanda, Three corners, Mile One, Mbonge road and Konye.
