Maurice Kamto defied DO’s ban and launched his campaigns in Bonaberi Douala |
The presidential campaigns of the MRC candidate, Maurice
Kamto, kicked off at the esplanade of the Lycee Polyvalent Bonaberi in the
Douala 4 municipality, a different venue from the one mentioned on the official
program.
The
rally took place despite a ban by the Douala 4 DO, who sent security forces to
stop all activities in the area.
“Cameroon is
supposed to be a democratic country. I don’t know why we have to launch
campaigns under military surveillance,” wondered an MRC official, as he cursed
the police and gendarmes that were deployed on the site.
Things
turned sour later, when an anti-riot vehicle arrived at the scene and created
commotion and uncertainty.
But the
arrival of Professor Maurice Kamto reassured the huge crowds that had gathered.
It marked the start of the rally proper.
The
campaign speech of the MRC flag-bearer was replete with concrete solutions to the
Anglophone crisis. Kanto also promised an increase of the minimum wage of
workers from 37.000frs to 55.000frs, access to portable water and electricity
and better healthcare facilities.
He said
if elected into office, his first action will be to solve the Anglophone
crisis. He announced he will go down to Buea and Bamenda to meet his Anglophone
brothers and sisters and wipe their tears.
“I will
go there to meet my people. I will go there because I miss them; I love them.
They are all Cameroonians. I will go there to wipe their tears,” Kamto said
amid resounding shouts and chants from the huge, enthusiastic crowds.
