US Citizens Barred From Travelling to SW & NW
A security alert issued by the US Embassy in Yaounde,
dated 24 August 2018, has banned citizens from Donald Trump’s country from
visiting the SW and NW regions of Cameroon.
The
security alert cited “reports of increased violence in the NW and SW regions.
It said “all but mission-essential travel by US Embassy personnel to these
regions is prohibited, limiting our ability to provide emergency services to US
citizens in these areas.
It added
that some medical facilities in these regions are reported to be understaffed
due to the unrest.
The US
Embassy enjoined all US citizens travelling to the two troubled regions to:
Always carry proof of their legal presence in Cameroon, such as a US passport
with visa, or a residency card.
It
warned that “since Cameroon does not recognize dual citizenship, US citizens of
Cameroonian descent should never attempt to use a Cameroonian passport or
Identification Card.”
Commentators
have been quick to conclude that the message hidden behind the outing of the US
Embassy is that the US believes that the deteriorating security situation in NW
and SW casts a credibility shadow on the upcoming elections; and public life,
including schools, cannot function smoothly in the NW and SW regions.
“You
might disagree, but that is the view of Washington,” says USA based Cameroonian,
Valerian Ekinneh Agbaw-Ebai .
