-Sacks 50 workers for indiscipline
-Many more to go as diplomas & school certificates are
being investigated for authenticity
The General Manager of the Cameroon Telecommunications
(CAMTEL), Judith Yah Sunday AchidiAchu, has sacked 50 workers of the company.
The
move came after the resolve by MrsAchidiAchu, who was appointed just a month
ago, to modernise the company which is limping and suffering from a huge debt
burden.
These
workers are accused of holding fraudulent certificates with some of them
earning fictitious salaries and allowances which has plunged the State-owned
company into a financial quagmire.
After
drilling the workers in a disciplinary council meeting recently, MrsAchidiAchu
concluded that the company would do well if it separates with them. An
atmosphere of uncertainty now reigns among the workers as to the next move of
the lady manager.
The
issue of fraudulent certificates, inflated allowances is a phenomenon in most
State owned companies in Cameroon with top management personnel filling the
offices with their relatives even when they are less qualified. In these
institutions, recruitment is never made public, but goes through a strict
backdoor negotiation process far from public view.
This
explains why in most of these companies workers can be heard speaking in their
mother tongue rather than the official French or English Languages. Usually, it
is the mother tongue of the General Manager or top management staff members of
the institution. With the personality cult and mafia surrounding these public
establishments, it would be a difficult task for the wife of the former Prime Minister,
who wants to clean one of Cameroon’s top public establishments.
