Organized to select athletes to take part in the annual
mount Cameroon race of Hope, the test race for the 2018 Race of Hope will be run
in Buea on Sunday 14 January 2017. The Race itself will be run on Saturday 17
February 2018.
According
to the SW Regional President of the Athletics Federation, Eteki Njoh Andrew,
everything is in place for an effective test race that will kick off on at
exactly 6am, with athletes to run from the Molyko Stadium to New Hut and back.
“Everything
has been put in place to make the race a success. The tracks have been cleared
to ease climbing by the athletes. The jerseys and numbers are also ready,”
Eteki assured.
He
added that about 75 athletes have so far registered for the test race and that
more are expected to register, especially as athletes sometimes do not respect
deadlines because of distance and other constraints.
The
test race was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday 13 January but it
was pushed to Sunday the 14th so as to enable officials coming from distant
towns to reach Buea in time.
“Officials
will be coming from Yaounde to Buea since this is the last test race before the
race proper,” Eteki explained, noting that technical officials from Yaoundé
will arrive in Buea on Saturday.
South
West flag bearer in the race, Esombe Lyonga, may not live up to his billing
this year because of an accident he had recently. He finished 3rd in the last
edition of the Race of Hope.
