A long-awaited inspection team from the Confederation of
African Football, CAF, is due to arrive in Cameroon on Thursday, 11 January to
assess the country’s preparations to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
The
visit was originally due to take place in August 2017 but the independent audit
firm Price Waterhouse Coopers withdrew at short notice without giving reasons
why.
Business
management consultancy, Roland Berger, has now stepped in as the independent
assessors.
Confederation
of African Football (Caf) president Ahmad Ahmad has said on several occasions
that African football’s ruling body will find an alternative host if Cameroon
is unable to host the finals.
Cameroon
has always insisted that it will be ready to host the tournament, even after
Caf approved changes to its structure.
In July
2017, Caf moved the timing for the finals from January/February to June/July
while also increasing the number of teams from 16 to 24.
“If the
Cameroon is unable to organise it, we will find a country that will organise
it,” Ahmad said in December.
“The
authorities in Cameroon, including the head of state, have all confirmed to us
that they will be ready.”
Preparations
have stepped up in Cameroon since the beginning of the year with large sections
of the proposed new stadiums and training grounds arriving by sea in the
various locations.
At a
press briefing yesterday in Yaounde, sports Minister, Bidoung Mkpatt said all
is set to welcome the Caf inspectors. He said work is advancing in all the
hosting sites and facilities will be ready by December 2018.
Inspection team schedule:
• 12 and 13
January in Yaounde
• 14 and 15
January in Garoua
• 16 and 17
January in Bafoussam
• 18 and 19

• 20 and 21
