The 20.000 capacity stadium to host the 2016 Female Africa Nations Cup in the South west region has been christened the “Limbe Omnisports stadium”.
The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Pierre Ismael Bidoung Mpkatt presided over the baptismal and inaugural ceremonies last Tuesday, January 26, 2016.
This was done in the midst of a strong delegation from the Confederation of African Football, CAF alongside top officials of the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT that came to evaluate the nature and readiness of the stadium ahead of the kick-off of the tourney in November.
Presiding over the occasion, Sports and Physical Education Minister extended words of appreciation to the Head of State, H.E Paul Biya for the significant efforts made to ensure a successful organisation of both the 2016 and 2019 female and Male Nations Cup respectively.
The Minister went further to salute the efforts of all government officials who are working tirelessly to make sure that the two significant football jamborees be a success. He also thanked Hope Assogbavi Komlan, a CAF expert and the entire delegation representing the Confederation of Africa Football for their sense of understanding and cooperation.
The President of FECAFOOT, Tombi A Roko Sidiki joined the Minister to thanked traditional rulers of the South West region as a whole and those from the Fako Division in particular for their collaboration and benediction of the new pitch. He also congratulated the entire population of the South West Region for handing over their lands for the construction of the stadium.
Throughout the heavily attended ceremony spiced with animations of all sorts with close to 20 dance groups and football lovers who cheered their teams during two exhibition matches, it was disclosed that the 2017 AFCON qualifier pitting the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and South Africa schedule for 26 March will be played at the Limbe Omnisport stadium to the applaud of participants.
