Amid calls for boycott by Anglophone
activists, local authorities in Kumba, Meme Division have launched preparations
for the 51 National Youth Day to be celebrated on 11 February.
The
second assistant SDO for Meme, Youngkuma Nelson Gamsi, on 19 January at the
kumba city council hall launched preparatory activities with the holding of the
first preparatory meeting.
Deliberations
at the meeting that brought together security officials, school heads,
education delegates alongside other stakeholders, were centered on the
evaluation of last year's celebration as well as adoption of proposed
activities for this year's celebration.
After
listening to a rundown of the activities of last year presented by the
divisional delegate of youth affairs and civic education, Mrs. Mbole, participants brainstormed on ways
and means of preempting any setbacks this year this, with a view to ensuring a
successful commemoration.
7 The
divisional delegate of basic education, Saba's Atem, for instance decried the
corrupt practices of some officials who diverted money meant for the
celebration into their personal pockets. Many school heads present all expressed
dissatisfaction at the manipulations that characterize the award of prizes to
deserving schools and pupils.
After
heated debates, the senior divisional officer announced the financial
allocations for each school in order to make the celebration a success. The delegate of youth affairs and civic
education equally created various committees to handle different aspects of the
preparation as the day draws near.
What
preoccupies many minds now is how the authorities will mobilize the students to
participate in the national event, given the boycott call by separatists.
