The Djottin Catholic Health Center in Noni
Sub Division and the St Francis Home for Skills Training, SAFRAHOST Njavnyuy in
Kumbo Central Sub Division all in Bui Division, North West region were on April
27, 2017 happy recipients of solar Energy Systems by Strategic Humanitarian
Services, SHUMAS and her partner Energy Without Borders, Spain.
The
gesture according to officials from the Djottin Catholic Health Center will
bring lights to the center which is harbored in a community that has not had
electricity even after they started applying to the government for it since
1979.
To
the officials of the St Francis Home for Skills Training, SAFRAHOST Njavnyuy
the solar system will help them out from regular low voltage and power outages.
While
receiving the solar Energy System, the Matron of the Djottin Catholic Health
Center Sis Thea thanked SHUMAS “for giving them hope” and promised they will
use it judiciously.
“SHUMAS has made us in this health center
to work 24 hours a day without retardation in the name of darkness. Work will
intensify in all the departments of the center”, Sis Thea observed.
She
also thanked SHUMAS for training three members of their community to take care
of the solar equipment and to report any abnormal occurrences.
He
announced that thanks to the training the three members have already commenced
a local hydro electric plant which is effectively working and supplying energy
to certain parts of the village.
Speaking
at the handing over at the Djottin Catholic Health Center, the representative
of the Director General of SHUMAS hoped that the system is going to
significantly improve on the health care delivery in the institution.
“Understanding
that energy is vital for development and especially in health care delivery,
communities not connected to the main power grid suffers from lack of energy or
low voltage and constant power cuts” he observed.
He
noted that without electricity, health institutions cannot run some basic
machines to guarantee efficient health care, while laboratories cannot function
properly saying that it is the reason why SHUMAS and her partners engaged in
solar electrification of rural health centers.
The
gesture falls under the SHUMAS Environmental program which is aimed at
improving “rural access to Energy sources to impoverished and local communities
within the national territory aimed at reaching the Cameroon’s government
vision on poverty alleviation and green energy propagation through the use of
solar energy for all by 2035.
SHUMAS
has so far installed over 30 solar systems in various communities throughout
the national territory.
To
ensure the sustainability of its projects, SHUMAS has adopted a participatory
approach where communities are involved from the conception, implementation and
completion so that they can take ownership and great care of the project.
