Captain Tataw Stephen is hail and hearty after all |
““I am health and fine; and i’m in my house
in Yaoundé”, said Tataw Eta Stephen, who captained the Indomitable Lions to the
Italia 1990 World Cup, where they stunned the world by being the first African
country ever to reach the quarter finals stage of the prestigeous tourney.
The
former TonnerreKalara Club, TKC defender was reacting to rumours that
circulated on social media that he was critically ill and in dire need of help.
On
that faithful Wednesday, this is the information (with in grammatical errors)
that went viral after a Facebook post:
“Breaking
News: Tataw Stephen Eta, former Indomitable Lion’s Captain is dying!!!Fellow
Cameroonians, report reaching us now reveals that the former captain, Stephen
Tataw Eta, is dying of diabetes in their family home in Ekona. Our
reporter revealed to us that a massive sores has developed on the right leg of
the former captain of the national team and he is at the point of between life
and death”.
“This
rumour peddler goes on, “What beats our imagination is that, when former lions
especially captains had a challenge, the government, particularly the
presidency intervened with all urgency. The most recent case is the situation
of Captain Song Bahanag, who was swiftly rushed to France for an emergency
medical intervention sponsored by the State of Cameroon”.
Seemingly
concerned the man who afflicted Tataw with Diabetes questions: “will the presidency also reacted to the very
critical condition of former captain of the Indomitable Lions, Stephen Tataw
Eta as they did for Song Bahanag?”
Following the rumourTataw said, “I am
really shocked at such information; I woke up to phone calls from my family,
brothers, sisters and friends from US and from everywhere”.
Laughing
as he spoke with The Median captain’s voice as he is fondly called apparently conveyed
his state of health, as he added, “I wonder what people who peddle such rumour
want. This is exactly how the rumour mongers killed captain Song Bahanag
several times before he finally got well”.
The
first African to have played in Japan for Tosu Futures, Tataw led the national
team to the quarter-finals of the Fifa World Cup, the first African country to
reach this level.
Tataw
has worked as assistant administrator of the national teams for years but the
problem today is that he is unemployed, only doing jobs for the football
federation when need be.
In
some countries with such 1990 performance, the captain and his teammates would
have been given houses or provided with some kind of social security.
Roving
Ambassador Roger Milla is the only one whose services to the nation have been
recognized. All other 1990 squad members have been forgotten and abandoned to
history. Even athletics star, Francoise Mbango was forced to seek French
nationality because social security
