Prior to the launching of voters
registration exercise for 2017 in the SWR, a preparatory meeting was held
bringing together Divisional branch heads and service heads, presided by the
regional delegate of ELECM, BaristerOkhaBauOkha, aimed at coming out with a
common strategy to step up voters registration in the SW on the basis of
lessons drawn from last year.
To
the SW regional delegate of Elecam, Mr. OkhaBauOkha, "women have the right
to vote whether it is for the National Assembly, Senate, and Parliament,
council or Presidential elections. We are working with civil society
organisations to encourage them to make sure that their members get registered
and also traditional authorities for them to sensitize women on the need for
them to be registered."
The
South West Region recorded a total number of 28,540 voters last year and is
aiming to go beyond 30.000 new voters this 2017. According to Mr. Moki Stephen,
ELECAM Communication officer, the action for 2017 comprises proximity and
special campaigns targeting groups such as youths on specific days such as 11th
February and 20th May, while the 8th of March was set aside as the day to get
more women to register as statistics so far suggest more men have registered
than women.
Meantime,
June has been set aside as a month to target socio-cultural groups and
professional associations.
The
voter’s registration campaign for 2017 will comprise the registration of new
voters who have come of age, updating existing information about people who
have died, and the change of existing residence. The information is furnished
from all the regions of the country which is then channelled to yaounde for a
national count. As set down by Law, the electoral register is open each year
from January 1 to August 31.
