The Administration of Meme Division in collaboration with the forces of law and order have on Friday March 17, 2017 confiscated some over 5000 litres of Zoa-Zoa from dealers of the illicit fuel in Kumba. The seizure comes after they had overtaken the entire fuel business in kumba leaving some owners of petrol stations disgruntled over poor sales.
While speaking to reporters after the crackdown mission, the First Assistant Senior Divisional officer for Meme Division, EpoulewaneVerklineMbua revealed "sales of the illicit fuel "Zoa-Zoa" had become so rampart, and it is done with a lot of impunity to the danger of the population " She added it was on the backdrop of such rampart sales that the administration alongside the forces of law and order launched a crackdown on dealers of such illicit fuel.
Quizzed on what will be done with the confiscated fuel, the ASDO noted "there is a national committee that has been setup by the Prime Minister and it is to be presented at each region. So this fuel that has been seized is going to be handed to that committee which will then decide on what to do with the fuel, because the committee has their technicians" she explained.
As to what will be done to those still illegally operating underground, the ASDO noted they will continue to do the crackdown on the Zoa-Zoa dealers.
While admiting that the illicit fuel that has taken over fuel business in kumba comes from neighboring Nigeria, passing through Ekondo-Titi and Mundemba, the ASDO revealed collaboration in future with authorities of the above towns to ensure the reduction of the rate at which ZoaZoa gets to Kumba.
Prior to this crackdown on zoa-zoa dealers, The Median learned that the dealers have a win-win arrangement with the forces of law and order t protect their business. Many others told this reporter that they give money to security men on a weekly basis to ensure their protection. These allegations were however refuted by the security men.
Meantime, it is equally alleged by some persons that some petrol stations in kumba have embarked on sale of Zoa-Zoa. This to them is the reason why some petrol stations in kumba have refused selling fuel to buyers on transparent.
The crackdown has however been seen as a mixed blessing to many. To drivers and bike riders they prefer zoa-zoa because it is cheaper and easily found even in the nugs and crannies of the quarters. Some rather noted that the move taken by the Meme administration will not only stop the circulation but has instead poured sand in the garri of some persons who had been reaping and feeding fat by illegally legalizing the sale of zoazoa in kumba.
