Women of the Buea council last Thursday 8 March 2018 joined their peers all over the world to celebrate the 33rd edition of the International women’s day. The council workers turned out in their numbers at the Bongo Square in Buea with their colourful women’s day fabrics.
To the manager of the Buea Council Cooperative Credit Union, BUCCCU, Odette Abunaw, the theme of this year’s celebration: “Intensify the fight against discrimination on women: strengthening partnership to speed up sustainable development”, was very relevant because women are great managers.
“A day like this is meant to show that women are no longer limited and there is no glass ceiling separating the men from the women,” Mrs Abunaw said.
The Mayor of Buea, Ekema Patrick Esunge, provided the women’s day fabric for his workers to celebrate the day. The gesture was greatly appreciated by the manager of BUCCCU.
“The fabric was provided by the Lord Mayor as a way of motivating us and to let us know that he is strongly behind us in all our endeavors. Those who decided to stay at home have themselves to blame because you cannot force people to come out and match on a day like this one when women should come out and commune with their fellow women…. A day like this is meant to showcase what women stand for,” Mrs Abunaw emphasized.
“The women’s day this year was quite impressive as the women turned out in their numbers irrespective of the tensed socio-political climate in the country. It was very nice seeing all the women celebrating their day in their beautiful “Kabas,” remarked another woman of the Buea Council.

With respect to those who boycotted the match past she saidd that it is their right and they alone know why they stayed back.
“It is a day for women to celebrate and people choose how they want to celebrate. Maybe those that stayed back in their homes are waiting to join their various social groups and celebrate elsewhere. But it is a day for all the women to celebrate,” the council worker said.
Those who took part in the match past under the banner of the Buea council included members Fako Sustainable Development, members of the Buea council cooperative credit union, Buea council workers and female counselors of the Buea council.
After the match past, the women who participated in the match pass where then treated to a sumptuous gala to honor them for participating in nation building.
