As women of
the Southwest region joined others the world over to celebrate women’s day on 8
March, officials of Elections Cameroon, ELECAM, were out in their numbers to
see to it that more women get registered on the electoral list so as to take
part in upcoming elections.
Talking to The Median Newspaper, the
SW Regional delegate of ELECAM Evelyn Mukete Bezejuh said the women needed to
get registered in order to exercise their civic duty during elections.
“It has been a tradition for ELECAM
that every women’s day celebration they carryout sensitization campaigns for
women and girls of voting age. We took advantage of the celebration to call on
all those who had not registered and those who registered elsewhere and want to
change their polling stations to come and register or do the necessary
modification. Meanwhile those who had registered but did not collect their
cards to come and collect their voter’s cards,” Mrs. Mukete said.

It should be
noted earlier on Sunday 4 March 2018 SW Elecam organized a mini marathon for
women in Buea in the build up to women’s day during which many more women took
advantage and put their names on the voter register. During the process, about
70 women were registered.
Statistics
presented by the regional delegate indicates a high registration of men than
women.
“The women are timid to come out and
register because of the present climate in the southwest region. Some women are
afraid to come out and register and/or collect their voter’s cards. The men are
more courageous than the women. However I hope that with time they will come in
their numbers as the sensitization campaign is going on,” Mukete said, calling
on the women to join the men in registering for voting..
However, ELECAM’s officials are
hoping to swell their figures as they continue sensitizing the youths of voting
age nationwide to register and be part of the electoral process in the country.
