The
administrative, teaching and support staff of the University of Bamenda, UBa on
March 2, 2017 paid academic honours to late Prof. Nsamenang Augustine Bame, the
immediate past Director of the Higher Teachers Training College, HTTC Bambili,
UBa. The seasoned psychologist, counselor and researcher died on Valentine’s
Day, February 14, 2018 after a brief illness.
In an academic honour ceremony
organised by the University of Bamenda for the fallen icon at the Amphi 650,
mourners comprising of the academia, administration, researchers and students
among others, from diverse fields of work paid glowing tribute to the late
University Don.
The casket which contained the
remains of Prof. Bame was brought in to and out of the Amphi by a college of
Doctors and Professors in a colourful academic procession.
Different eulogies that came from
the late Professor’s collaborators, students and the different institutions and
organizations that he adhered to, described him as a dedicated, selfless,
committed teacher, researcher and a shrewd administrator.
The Minister of Higher Education,
Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo in his eulogy read during the ceremony described
Prof. Nsamenang Bame as a “scholar of mettle” judging from his numerous
publications.
The Vice Chancellor of the
University of Bamenda while attesting Prof. Nsamenang’s enormous capacity for
work noted that he was “very instrumental in laying the ground work for the
newly created faculty of Education” of UBa.
The Director of the Higher Teachers
Training College, Prof. Tita Margaret lamented that the school is mourning “not just a long serving,
committed and dedicated member of staff, but an academician of the highest
rank, scholar of international renown and an accomplished scientist”.
The Head of Department of Guidance
and Counseling of HTTC, Dr Fai Lilian Wiysanyuy who was a student of Prof. Bame
and took over from him as HOD, regretted that the death of the renowned
academic has orphaned students and junior colleagues.
“You have left a void which will
hardly be replaced but as you disciples we shall try to keep your legacies and
build on your foundation” she added.
Emeritus Professor Therese Tchombe
in her homage said Prof. Bame Nsamenang, may be dead physically but his
intellectual legacy is eternal.
“…his life is a testimony of a
scholar who never permitted political ideologies and guest for power to derail
him from his professional call to service as a teacher, researcher and
community developer. He has set an example for the rest of us to follow namely:
if you cannot teach your students well, if you cannot conduct research and
publish, …then you cannot call yourself a true academic at the University”, she
concluded.
Born in 1951, Prof Bame attended Sacred
Heart Primary School, Kitiwum, and St Augustine’s College Kumbo all in Nso. He
proceeded to National School of Nursing and Midwifery, Bamenda and then to
University of Ibadan in Nigeria where he obtained a Bsc in Nursing, a Masters
degree in Guidance and Counseling and
later the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Clinical Child Psychology. Thereafter
he was a fellow in many institutions.
He was recruited Assistant Lecturer
in 1993 at the University of Yaounde 1, promoted rank of lecturer in 1998,
Associate Professor in 2004 and in 2011 he was promoted to the rank of full
Professor of Psychology and Counseling.
The erstwhile Director of the Higher
Teachers Training College, HTTC Bambili of the University of Bamenda, and
former Head of Department of Guidance and Counseling in the same school served
in many administrative positions in the university.
