A bike rider
was shot dead by a lady gendarme in Kumba as women celebrated international
women’s day on Thursday 8 March 2018. The macabre incident occurred at about
5pm in the evening, in front of the gendarme post situated along the Buea road
street.
Eye-witness reports said the biker,
whose name we couldn’t get, was gunned down as he tried to force his way
through in disrespect of a temporal halt ordered by the Gendarmes as they
brought down the national flag.
It is understood that circulation of
traffic and persons along the highway bordering the gendarmerie post is halted
temporally whenever the flag is hoisted or lowered.
But we gathered that the rider
forced his way and tried to run past in spite of the temporal holdup. Several
shots were fired in the air before the one that picked him, we learnt.
Eyewitnesses said the rider
struggled and moved on a few meters with the bullet wounds before he finally
succumbed.
An angry mob
that was gathering and steaming to protest in front of the brigade soon after
the incident was brought under control.
The population of Kumba is now in a
state of fear and uncertainty as no one knows what will definitely happen next.
The lifeless
body of the said motorbike rider was taken to the Kumba hospital mortuary.
After the incident, some inhabitants
who spoke to this reporter said the town of Kumba is a sleeping volcano that
should not be provoked. They said gendarme officers should not force the
populations to bring out the ugly side of themselves by carrying out the kind
of provocation shown by their lady colleague.
“Kumba has known some calm ever
since the coming of the sitting commissioner of the central police station. Let
gendarmes not try to compromise the peace that the commissioner is trying to
instill in town,” a denizen warned, questioning rhetorically “how can you shoot
and kill somebody just like that?”
