Some 56
graduate teachers from higher teacher training colleges, who were arrested
recently in Yaounde, have been released. The young teachers were released at
midnight on Friday.
They were arrested as they were
mobilizing to manifest in front of the PM’s Office in Yaounde, in protest
against the nonpayment of their salary arrears and the slow process of their
integration into the public service.
Receiving the teachers shortly after
their release, the outgoing minister of secondary education Jean Ernest Massena
Ngale Bibehe assured them that gov’t is working towards finding a lasting
solution to their worries.
In response, the teachers called off
their planned strike action and promised to resume work on Monday, while
waiting for solutions to their grievances.
They expressed the hope that the
upcoming national education forum will address the problems of teachers in the
country.
