132nd Labour Day:

Workers in Fako Call for Peace, Unity in Cameroon

-They made the call during celebrations to mark the 132nd International Labour Day, at the Manga Williams Avenue in Limbe, on Tuesday, 1st May.

Presiding over the ceremonies, the SDO of Fako, Engamba Ledoux enjoined the populations of Fako to promote peace, ensure social dialogue and to eschew all forms of violence perpetrated by misguided Ambazonia fighters and sympathizers. 

            He called on the workers to ensure excellence in every service they render, praising and encouraging them for their courage in turning out massively for the celebrations despite the precarious social climate.

            The SDO proceeded to decorate some 36 outstanding workers with labour medals. He personally decorated with Gold medals some five workers who had put in at least 25 years of service. The others were decorated with silver gild and silver medals by other dignitaries who came to witness the celebration including the GMs of CDC and SONARA, MP for Limbe, Government Delegate of Limbe and Mayors of the three councils of the seaside resort city among others.

            Speaking on behalf of workers, trade union leader, Gabriel Mbene Vefonge congratulated recently elected staff representatives of the different companies and corporations in Fako, calling on them to keep aside personal interest in the exercise of their job.

            Mbene laid emphasis on social dialogue, citing the current socio-political crisis rocking the nation as a consequence of the absence of social dialogue.

            Workers representatives appealed to the government to initiate ‘meaningful dialogue’ as a way of solving the crisis.

            A highpoint of this year’s celebration was a block of marchers clad in attires showcasing the cultures of some major tribes of the country.
