Ahead of May 20 Celebrations:

Buea DO Imposes Dusk to Dawn Curfew
-Bans Movement of Motorbikes, Persons
By Boris Esono in Buea
The Divisional Officer for Buea, Kouam Wokam Paul has prohibited the circulation of commercial motorbikes and movement of people after 7 PM. He did not mention the duration of the ban.
The decision is contained in order No. 139/L/SEC/22/SP signed by the DO on 7 May 2018.
It reads: “The Divisional Officer for Buea sub division reminds all Commercial motor cycle riders and the general public of the prohibition of movements from 7pm to 6am….Any rider who goes contrary to the order shall attract immediate reaction from the forces of law and order without prior warning.”
The curfew is aimed at preserving peace and tranquility in the Sw regional capital as the National Day on May 20 approaches.
The DO’s order has been seen by some as a measure to deprive them of their rights. The motorbike riders for example say it is their only source of livelihood.

“Instead of going after the terrorists, they are going after us who have nothing to do with the present bad climate in the country. The country does not provide jobs for us and when we decide to do such jobs to survive they prevent us from working,” complained one bike rider.
