Curbing poor performance in sports

MINSEP launches program for detection of young talents
The ministry of sports and physical education has launched a project for the detection and training of young sports talents in the country.  The objective of the program is to improve on the level of performance of athletes in all the major sports disciplines through a better structuring of the processes of detecting and training of sports talents.
    Speaking at the launching ceremony at the Yaounde multi-sports complex on Wednesday 6 May 2015 the minister of sports and physical education said the project depicts the importance the government attaches to the detection and training of sports talents in the country.
    Mr. Adoum Garoua said the objective of the project is to enable Cameroon to once again become a reference and leader in the domain of sports on the African Continent. 

    Presenting the project earlier, the MINSEP’s focal point of the project, Tonye N’Hanack said the project will comprise three phases: The first phase will last four years, the second eight years and the third, 12 years.
    He said the first phase will be open to children aged between 13 and 14, while the second phase will concern children aged between 10 and 12. The third phase considered the longest, will be for children aged six and above.
    Ten sports disciplines have been retained for the pilot phase of the project namely; athletics, basketball, boxing, football, judo, weight lifting, handball, wrestling, table tennis and volleyball. If successful, the program will progressively be extended to all the other sports disciplines.
    A committee has been put in place to conceive the teaching manuals, train staff and provide the equipment necessary for the implementation of the program, Adoum Garoua said, adding that the project would be implemented in collaboration with the different sports federations as well as the national Olympic and sports committee.
    The launching ceremony was attended by government ministers, the governor of the Centre region, Joseph Wilson Otto and Roving Ambassador Roger Milla among other guests.
    The launching of the talents detection program was followed the following day by the annual meeting of heads of central and external services of the Ministry of Sports. The 2-day meeting took place at the Yaounde Palais des Congres.
    Presided over by the MINSEP, officials during the two days took stock of activities in the past year and suggested solutions to the challenges encountered.
