SCNC’s Maxwell Oben granted bail

Maxwell Oben Eyong
Frontline SCNC activist, Maxwell Oben Eyong, has been released from detention at the Buea prison.
Maxwell regained his freedom on 25 April 2015, after he was granted bail by the judge of the Buea court of 1st Instance, Justice Nabangi Beatrice Ntuba.
Sympathizers, well wishers, family members and especially SCNC sympathizers present in court notably Mola Njoh Litumbe, Leke Theodore, Ben Bessong (alias Ben Bella) and Bisong Mathias Arrey all jumped for joy when Oben Maxwell’s lawyers negotiated and got his bail granted.
The battery of lawyers who fought hard for Oben Maxwell’s release included Barrister Ajong Stenislaus as lead council, Barrister Nkongho Felix Agbor Balla (FAKLA President), Barrister Tambe Daniel, Barrister Ngongi Ikomi and Barrister Ndumu.
It should be recalled that Oben Maxwell was arrested and detained in Buea in February when he was found in possession of a book “Guerilla warfare, self-defence from the attack” by Che Guevara. Oben was later transferred to the Kondengui prison in Yaounde.

Barely weeks later, he was subsequently transferred back to Buea and referred to face the military judge. After several adjournments at the military tribunal, Oben’s lawyers took the matter to the appeal court, but the matter could not be heard here because of the absence of recods of proceedings at the military tribunal.
On 17 December 2014, the military tribunal declared its incompetence to try the matter. This led the appeal court to recommend the matter for heaving at the court of 1st instance.
After two hearings in this court the trial judge, Madame Ntuba on Thursday 23 April 2015 requested that bail be granted Oben Maxwell.
Oben Maxwell has thus walked back to freedom after spending more than a year in jail.
