Four storey building collapses in B’da

Low quality of building materials blamed
The Divisional Delegate of Housing and Urban Development for Mezam- Roger Likane, has blamed the collapse of a four storey, 60 room building in Bambili on the use of cheap and low quality material.
Talking to The Median while visiting the site on July 19, 2015, Roger Likane also revealed that the land lord in question had no legal backings for the construction.
Corroborating the Divisional Delegate of Housing and Urban Development for Mezam, the Mayor of Tubah Council, Tanjong Frederick revealed that the landlord had no building permit and that the building was erected so fast, just like others in Bambili. He said the builders were in a haste to finish the house before the start of next academic year. Consequently, they worked night and day to attain their goal.

Mayor Tanjong Martin added that it is just one among many of such cases that are yet to be uncovered around Bambili.
Even though no death or injury was registered, many hold that the incident would have resulted to an issue of National mourning had students started living there given that the four storey building which was being constructed as students’ hostel, was almost completed before it suddenly collapsed flat to the ground.
Ever since the Government announced the creation of the University of Bamenda, many have been running helter-skelter in search for land to construct structures for commercial purposes.
From 2012 when the University of Bamenda went operational to present date, the rate of construction of student hostels has tripled.
Many landlords around Bambili are more concerned about making profits, they give no consideration for the wellbeing of their tenants, observers have noted.
